NPS WPA 1935 Poster by Dorothy Waugh. This is a rare and very collectible poster created by Dorothy Waugh for the WPA circa 1935. This is one in a series of five Dorothy Waugh NPS posters in our collection.

Dorothy Waugh was a talented early 20th century artist. She studied at the Chicago Art Institute and worked as a commercial artist in Chicago. Dorothy relocated to New York City and was manager of the children's book department at Alfred A. Knopf in the early 1930s. She became the production supervisor of the National Park Service and did copy, layout and artwork for the NPS. She was appointed special lecture and critic to the New York School of Fine and Applied Art in the late 1930s and taught topography and design.

Dorothy created a series of WPA posters for the NPS circa 1935. These posters were printed on thin, soft paper and very few survive. Her style is similar in some respects to other WPA poster artists, but she developed her own unique art deco style. Her National Park Service posters are rare and very collectible. Dorothy Waugh was an important American artist from the early 20th century and her NPS posters are among the finest and most collectible WPA designs created.
