Samuel L. Schmucker: The Discovery of His Lost Art

Samuel L. Schmucker: The Discovery of His Lost Art is a book based on the discovery of lost artwork and the Yellowstone Park Connection

The chapters in the book include William Henry Jackson and the Detroit Publishing Company and The House of Haynes. These chapters discuss the connection of the artwork to Yellowstone National Park. There is new historical information in the book relating to Yellowstone National Park. This includes the early photography of the park and the concessionaire businesses in the park.

The story of the lost artwork, and how we found it, is fascinating. Samuel Schmucker is recognized by many deltiologists as the finest American postcard artist from the Golden Age of Postcards, circa 1898-1918. He died at the young age of 42 and never received the wide spread recognition he justly deserved.

Schmucker's wife, Katharine, was his inspiration and the model for his paintings. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1896-1899 and the Brandywine School 1899-1900. His teacher was Howard Plye, considered to be the most important and influential American art teacher of his time. Schmucker's classmates included Jessie Willcox Smith, Maxfield Parrish and N.C. Wyeth.
